Reading Dragon

 

The McArthur Library Children's Room has materials for children from birth through 8th grade, as well as materials for parents, caregivers, and teachers. In addition to books, the collection includes audio cassettes, a growing collection of CD's, audiobooks on both cassette and CD, book-and-cassette kits, videos, and DVD's. As with adult and young adult materials, if we do not own something you want, or if it is checked out, you can request it from one of the over sixty libraries in our Minerva system.
Our Regular Story Programs
In order to nurture the changing developmental needs of young children, we offer a range of programs designed to lead them to a love of language and reading. All of our early childhood programs are held throughout the year and do not require any preregistration.
   
Mondays, 10:00  Toddler Time

 

    
    A language enrichment program geared for children 18-36 months. Join us for beginning story books, rhymes, music and movement activities.
  Tuesdays, 10:00   Baby & Me  
    An interactive lap sit program for babies 0-18 months and their caregivers. Introduce your baby to the wonderful world of books through songs, rhymes and adult/child book sharing time.
  Thursdays, 10:00  Preschool Story Time  
    A language enrichment program geared for children 3-6 years old. Join us for stories, rhymes, music and movement activities, crafts and more!
  Saturday Programs  
    Join us on Saturday mornings for a variety of family friendly programs. Please check our online calendar to find out more!
 

Why are story programs important?

Story Time

  
  • They introduce children to books and encourage a love of reading.
  • They help children learn language.
  • They help your children learn to be with other kids in a group.
  • They help parents and caregivers learn about books that are good for their children's ages.
  • They are special times for parents and caregivers to spend together with their children.
  • They're FUN!

For more information on how to encourage a love of reading in your child, visit the website of Raising Readers, Maine's program that partners with healthcare providers to give every child from birth through age 5 a new book at each well-child visit to the doctor's office.

 

 

Museums

Family Museum Passes!

  • Children's Museum of Maine
    Admits a family group of up to four at half price.

  • Portland Museum of Art
    Admits a family group of up to six for free.

  • USM's Southworth Planetarium
    Free admission for one family group.

To reserve a pass, please call the Children's Room at 284-4181. Pass users should be registered borrowers of McArthur Library.
